July 2012 Meeting Minutes

Here’s the news from Tuesday’s meeting…

One of the opening questions was about surge protectors. Seems they should be of really good quality in order to do the job they are supposed to do. Especially in light of the recent thunder and lightening storms and power surges. Brands like Woods or Ace were not recommended. Better ones recommended were Panamax with at least 2 ports or better are with 8 ports. Running about $45.00.

The new version of Mountain Lion is out, but it was suggested to wait until the next version to download, giving Apple a chance to work out any bugs in the system. It was mentioned that depending on the date of your Snow Leopard, you may be able to go from that straight to Mountain Lion without first going to Lion.

Our presentation was on using an online site called “DropBox” by Jay Sorenson. This is a system for keeping folders separate from space on your computer, and can be used with friends that also have DropBox to share folders, projects that both people need to work on, and photos with friends and family members.

First you will need to go to www.dropbox.com, download, and then drag into your applications folder. To use go to the applications folder, open, and first register, email and set up user name and password. You can choose the free space or opt for larger space for a fee. There will be a created folder on your computer and one matching in the online DropBox system. What you do in one will up date in both, along with iPads and iPhones if you are on WiFi. (you will need to download the Apps on those systems first. ) There are so many uses for this system, so be sure to check it out.

Thanks to all of you that took time out of their summer to join us, and hope to see you in August.

Sincerely, Linda, Secretary
